The Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek is a breathtaking and invigorating high-altitude adventure for nature enthusiasts. Upon your arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be greeted by our local tour representative with a traditional welcoming style and after a short introduction at the airport you will be then transferred to your hotel. After a short break you will be led for a half day sightseeing in the picturesque Paro valley. Paro valley in reality is a village now transformed itself into a small town. Today it is undeniably undergoing lots of construction with booming contemporary buildings following the same traditional Bhutanese architecture. Your sightseeing in Paro includes a visit to the National Museum, Paro Dzong, Jangsa Dumtse Lhakhang and Zongrakha Ney. In the evening stroll around the somewhat a bustling small township of Paro.

Today we recommend a reasonably early start – drive up to the base of Tiger’s Nest (11 km from the town), and its now time to embark on your somewhat arduous adventure for the day. Taktsang is one of the supreme and sacred holy places in the entire Himalaya. The monastery lies at 3000ft/915m clinging to a vertical granite cliff overlooking the Paro valley and its one of the most spectacularly located monastery in Bhutan. Remember that the hike to Tiger’s Nest is quite an uphill task and it takes around three to four hours at an average speed. Returning from Tiger’s Nest, your last stop for the day is the historical Kyechu Lhakhang. This temple is one of the first and old temples in Bhutan built as early as seventh century.

Drive to Gyenekha, a beautiful village which falls under Thimphu district. This village is known for the production of Matsutake and Chantarelle Mushrooms. Your drive from the main road takes rough 8km track from the main road up to the Primary School from here a short descent to the river bank where your trek begins. Your trek begins with crossing a river and gradually ascends uphill till you reached a huge rock platform from where you will have a picturesque view of the valley below and good stop for your picnic lunch. From this place you will further walk for two hours to reach your campsite at Gur which lies amongst abundance of flowers, fig and juniper forest. Your campsite lies at an elevation of 10,824ft/3300m.

Today your adventure winds you through fir, spruce, birch, rhododendrons and through crossing the ridge of Pagalaptsa Pass (4250m) from where you will enjoy the affordable views of the rugged mountain vegetation. Appreciate the rugged beauty of the surroundings and the spectacular view of Mt. Kanchenjunga (Sikkim), and other Himalayan range. From the pass you will gradually descent down through yak pastures and the stone house built by the yah herders. The trail takes you through the whole Dagala range with beautiful landscape, through alpine wildflower meadows. Campsite is at an altitude 14,104ft/4300m – a lake well known for its golden trout.

Today you will be spending your day here in Labatamba exploring numerous lakes here in this vicinity. Enjoy your day with walking up the lakes like – Sertsho, Relitsho, Jagetsho, Hentsho, Janatsho, Jomila tsho and many more. We also encourage our trekkers to carry your fishing stuff and get approved license to take advantage of the opportunity to engage in trout fishing as the location is ideal for trout fishing.

Campsite Elevation: 3900m

Your trail begins with a gentle walk uphill for 30 minutes along the side of Dala Tsho up to the top at 4520m. Reaching the top the view back down the valley below will fascinate you with majestic Himalayan peaks like – Mt. Everest (Nepal), Mt. Kanchenjunga (Sikkim) with other permanent peaks of Bhutan like Mt. Jomolhari(7326), Mt. Jichu Drakey(6794m), Mt. Tserim Gang(7300m), Mt. Khang Bum(6526m), Mt. Masagang (7165m), Mt. Tshendn Gang(7100m), Mt. Gangchen Ta (6794m). Here the Himalayan Monal Peasant is common. As you descent further passing some yak herders camp to Dochhu Chu (stream) following the river for a while and slowly your journey hits upward your campsite at Panka (4000m).

Today your trail leads you to Talakha, the last campsite with the day beginning with crossing several passes and ridge with less climb. Every pass offer you an opportunity with impressive look out to the Himalayan peaks. If you are here in the month of June and July, search for the Blue Poppy (the national flower of Bhutan) and variety of mountain birds flock around this around this area. Once crossing the pass, Tale-La (4180m), you will gradually start to descent downhill till you reached Talakha Gomba (temple). You campsite will be just above the temple and this is one of the best spot to treat yourself with adorning view of the Thimphu city.

Today you will be treated with short walk downhill till the feeder road through alpine and mixed vegetation. Your vehicle will pick you from the road below the temple and drive you to the capital city. Having entered the capital Thimphu, you will soon notice that it is unlike most capital cities of the world. Thimphu consists of around 80,000 populations with no high rise buildings and no traffic lights rather it is directed by the police.

 

After your breakfast in the hotel, drive further north of Thimphu valley for your day excursion to Cheri Gompa which takes around 1.1/2 hours walk from the main parking road and then take the alternative, and shorter, path from the parking lot up to Tango Gompa which is a 300m ascent and takes around one hours. Returning back for lunch in the capital city your next stop is the Memorial Chorten, Semtokha Dzong, Golden Buddha, Painting School and in the evening the giant fortress of Thimphu.

After an early breakfast at the hotel, check out and drive to Paro, where you’ll bid farewell to your helpful Bhutanese guide and driver, reflecting on the incredible journey and unforgettable experiences shared in this enchanting country, before boarding your flight to your onward destination, carrying with you cherished memories of Bhutan’s stunning landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality, knowing that the spiritual and cultural insights gained during your visit will leave a lasting impression and inspire future adventures, as you embark on the next leg of your travels with a heart full of gratitude and a spirit enriched by Bhutan’s unique charm.
